FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Do you take my insurance?
I take some plan types and am out of network with others. Write to me with the name of your plan and I'll check your benefits before we book anything. I don't bill Medicare or Medicaid.
What is a superbill and how do I use it?
A superbill is an itemized monthly receipt you send to your own plan to ask for reimbursement for out-of-network visits. It lists a diagnosis code, which the plan will see. Reimbursement is not guaranteed, so ask your plan before you rely on it.
What is a Good Faith Estimate?
If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written estimate of the cost of your care before you start. If a bill comes to $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. It is not a contract. I give you one before the first session.
How much does it cost, and can I use an HSA or FSA card?
You get my fee in writing before you book, and it stays the same for every session. HSA and FSA cards usually work. I keep a limited number of reduced-fee sessions, so ask when you write. The fees page has the details.
What happens in the first session?
We talk about what brought you to look for a therapist, only as much as you want to say, and what you'd like to be different. I explain how sessions work, how I protect your privacy and what I can and can't do. You don't have to explain your identity to me.
How often do we meet, and for how long?
Sessions are 50 minutes. Many people start weekly. Your clinician sets the pace with you and checks it often, so it can change.
Are you licensed where I live?
I'm licensed in Connecticut. For video sessions you need to be in Connecticut when we meet. If you're elsewhere, I'll help you find a therapist who is licensed where you live.
What do I do in a crisis?
Call or text 988, any time, or call 911 in an emergency. This website and my messages are not monitored around the clock. The crisis page lists lines that are staffed by and for LGBTQ+ people.
What is confidential, and what are the limits?
What you tell me stays between us, with a few limits the law sets: serious risk of harm to yourself or someone else, abuse of a child or of an older or disabled adult, and a court order. I explain these in the first session, before you say anything you'd want held back. I don't contact anyone, and I don't mail anything to your home, unless you ask.
Do you see people under 18?
No. My practice is for adults, 18 and older. If you're younger, the crisis page lists lines you can reach today, and I'm glad to help you find a therapist who sees teens.
Do you write letters?
Yes, for people I've worked with, as part of therapy. The letters page explains how it works, in plain words.
What is your cancellation policy?
I ask for 24 hours' notice to cancel or move a session. If you can't give it, write to me and we'll talk. I don't charge you for a session when you're ill or in a crisis.
Still have a question?
Write to me. I reply on weekdays.
